CIRO is proud to participate in World Investor Week (WIW) from October 7 – October 13 2024. This global campaign, led by IOSCO (International Organization of Securities Commissions), raises awareness about the importance of investor education and protection, focused on key issues in today’s financial world.
This year, we’re raising awareness about two common topics that are impacting the investment landscape and posing risks to investors: Finfluencers and Romance Scams/Pig Butchering Scams.
Finfluencers, or financial influencers, use social media platforms to share investment advice. While they can seem knowledgeable, it’s important to recognize that their advice is often unregulated, which can expose investors to unnecessary risks and misinformation. Knowing how to assess the credibility of these influencers is important for making informed decisions.
Watch the video to learn more about Finfluencers and the risks involved.
Another emerging threat in the financial world involves Romance Scams and Pig Butchering Scams, which increasingly target individuals online. These scams start by establishing emotional trust through fake relationships, only to manipulate victims into investing in fraudulent schemes. This can lead to significant financial losses for unsuspecting victims.
CIRO is dedicated to promoting investor protection and education. Learn more about how and why we protect investors by watching Understanding CIRO’s Mandate video.
